The development of maintenance capabilities responds to the growing potential of the intermodal transport market in Poland
25 September 2025 – Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, is bolstering its position in the locomotive segment. The largest rolling stock manufacturer in Poland, Alstom, has signed a letter of intent with DB Cargo Polska to establish a modern service centre in Rybnik. The facility, equipped with locomotive service bays, would be a complementary unit to the already existing centre in Toruń, where Alstom has been servicing Traxx locomotives. Together these sites allow Alstom to enhance its capabilities to meet the growing demand for locomotive service solutions in Poland.
Over the past 24 months, Alstom has entered into agreements with operators in Poland for the supply of 61 third-generation Traxx Universal locomotives. This will increase within coming years the already growing number of Alstom locomotives operating in Poland and in Eastern corridor. As a result the dynamic development of the intermodal transport market is driving increased demand among rail operators for comprehensive and professional maintenance services that ensure high fleet availability and reliability.
"In this context, operators in the region are increasingly investing in modern, energy-efficient rolling stock. This, in turn, is driving growing demand for comprehensive service solutions. At Alstom, we are committed to meeting this demand by offering technical support to our customers.”
“For many years, Alstom’s solutions have helped rail operators achieve their strategic goals while contributing to the development of a sustainable and low-emission Trans-European Transport Network. In this context, operators in the region are increasingly investing in modern, energy-efficient rolling stock. This, in turn, is driving growing demand for comprehensive service solutions. At Alstom, we are committed to meeting this demand by offering technical support to our customers,” emphasizes Beata Rusinowicz, Managing Director of Alstom in Poland.
“The letter we signed with Alstom today heralds a strong partnership. A partnership that is being forged here in Poland. Our country's importance on the European railway map is steadily growing – it's no coincidence that we signed the letter of intent at the TRAKO trade fair, where we celebrate, among other things, Polish rolling stock solutions and technology that are changing the shape and direction of railway development. Our Rybnik production and repair facility is one of the most modern in this part of Europe, and its attractive location guarantees optimal conditions for the maintenance and inspection of s Traxx locomotives,” comments Marek Staszek, President of DB Cargo Polska.
Since 2000, more than 6000 Alstom locomotives have been ordered worldwide, confirming the company’s key role in transforming global rail transport toward lower emissions. In addition, Alstom is a leader in the locomotive maintenance segment, currently servicing over 2,450 locomotives globally, including more than 600 modern multi-system Traxx locomotives. Their modular platform enables operation in both passenger and freight transport for domestic and cross-border services. These vehicles cover a total of more than 300 million kilometers per year across 20 European countries.
In recent months, Traxx Universal locomotives have become the preferred choice for key operators in Central and Eastern Europe. Alstom is currently fulfilling orders including 40 locomotives for OnTrain, 18 locomotives for CLIP Intermodal, and 3 for Captrain Polska. The homologation of these vehicles encompasses, in addition to Poland, the main transport corridors in Europe—from France, the Benelux, Sweden and Germany, through Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, to Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia. Locomotive production takes place at Alstom’s plant in Kassel, while key components, such as carbodies, are manufactured in Wrocław, highlighting the importance of Polish facilities in the global supply chain.
