17 September 2025 – Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, today celebrates the 70th anniversary of its historic Sesto San Giovanni site, a Group center of excellence for the production, repair, overhaul and maintenance of subsystems and components for rolling stock serving both national and international markets.
“Celebrating the 70th anniversary of our Sesto San Giovanni site means paying tribute to an industrial history made of innovation, expertise and passion for mobility.”
On the occasion of the anniversary, Alstom announced a major hiring campaign, with 100 new positions to be opened by March 2026. The opportunities are aimed at technically specialized profiles in railway maintenance, with skills in electrical and electromechanical fields, as well as graduates in mechanical, electronic, and management engineering—preferably with a background or specialization in industrial automation or railway vehicle technologies.
At the same time, Alstom confirmed ongoing investments of 25 million euros in its Services business in Italy, aimed at strengthening industrial activities, expanding production capacity and local presence, and accelerating process digitalization through continuous research and innovation.
The event was attended by Roberto Di Stefano, Mayor of Sesto San Giovanni, Claudia Terzi, Regional Councillor for Infrastructure of Lombardy, Franco Lucente, Regional Councillor for Transport of Lombardy, Alvise Biffi, President of Assolombarda, and Simone Bettini, President of Federmeccanica, alongside Alstom management and employees.
“Celebrating the 70th anniversary of our Sesto San Giovanni site means paying tribute to an industrial history made of innovation, expertise and passion for mobility,” said Michele Viale, Managing Director of Alstom Italy. “This site represents the perfect balance between manufacturing tradition and technological transformation, contributing to the development of a resilient and sustainable railway industry serving both Italy and Europe.”
During the celebration, the exhibition “70 Years of Traction Towards the Future. From Mechanical Innovation to Smart Mobility” was inaugurated. This is part of a broader Alstom project which, by 2026, will establish a permanent museum dedicated to the railway world. The initiative aims to bring people — especially younger generations — closer to industrial history, technological innovation and the opportunities of the rail sector.
The exhibition retraces the industrial evolution of the site since 1955, the year Engineer Parizzi founded the historic “Elettromeccanica Parizzi Spa.” Through photographs, objects, and historic components, it highlights the plant’s strategic role in developing cutting-edge mobility solutions in Italy and worldwide.
Acquired by Alstom in 2000, the Sesto San Giovanni site represents today a center of excellence for the production, maintenance, overhaul and repair of railway subsystems and components for high-speed trains, regional trains, trams and metro systems. Thanks to the expertise of over 300 people and international synergies, the site produces more than 1,500 components, including traction converters, driving desks and other subsystems, along with over 12,000 spare parts and repairs. It operates as part of the Product Line Services in Milan, Lombardy and across Italy through several dedicated maintenance depots.
The Site also hosts an innovative 3D Printing Laboratory dedicated to the production of spare parts for the main railway operators, equipped with advanced polymer printing technologies and reverse engineering tools. In addition, the site is equipped with a Control Room that monitors fleet availability and reliability in commercial service and, in 2025, received the Assolombarda Award in the “Digitalization” category for its outstanding performance and the adoption of advanced digital solutions.
The Services division today employs more than 1,180 professionals across Sesto San Giovanni (MI), Nola (NA), Savigliano (CN), Vado Ligure (SV), Rome, Bologna, Florence and more than 40 depots nationwide. Services provides tailor-made solutions for maintenance, modernization and lifecycle management of rolling stock and infrastructure, ensuring long-term efficiency, reliability and sustainability.
Alstom has a long-standing presence in Lombardy, with two sites located in Sesto San Giovanni and Valmadrera (System & Infrastructure), and is involved in strategic projects such as the production of Coradia Stream H™ hydrogen trains, with zero direct CO₂ emissions, destined for the non-electrified Brescia–Iseo–Edolo line operated by Trenord, as well as the construction of the new T2 tram line in Brescia. In Lombardy, a fleet of over 100 Alstom-built trains (from the Coradia™ regional family) is currently in operation, with maintenance carried out at dedicated depots.
The event was also an opportunity to highlight the experience, talent, and contributions of people whose work has been a distinctive factor in the company’s growth and innovation over the past 70 years. The “Guardians and Custiodians of Memory” were celebrated, an acknowledgment of excellence and tradition, passing the baton to younger generations tasked with continuing the journey of mobility innovation.
The Alstom Excellence Awards were also presented, celebrating people and projects that have distinguished themselves through their achievements and contributions to the company’s growth. Among them was the program supporting the integration of neurodivergent people at Italian sites, which strengthens Alstom’s commitment to building inclusive communities and values diversity as a strategic asset.
